(my scanner bites--I'll address that some time in the near future)
So I was reading an article at Salon about bees... the following is probably the most disturbing quote:
McDONALD: A few years ago, in a very remote part of the state, I found thriving bee populations that I assumed were feral. To help them along, I set up bait boxes and put in anti-mite strips. I slipped them in seed oil and made little puddles so the bees had to walk through the oil in this experiment I called "remote medication." But as the summer went on, the bees collapsed in spite of my attempts to help them. The feral population is just getting so hard hit that I suspect it's virtually gone by now. (emphasis mine)
What they're saying is that it isn't just commercial bees that are disappearing, or even just bees, but all pollinators including moths and butterflies that are disappearing. Whatever is happening to them, it's happening to all of them.
I've never been afraid of bees in the way everyone I know has been. When I became an atheist, I had spent weeks in prayer trying to understand my discomfort with my faith. One day, sitting in a family member's garden, a bee landed on my hand. I watched it crawl around and pinch my skin with its jaws very gently, exploring the texture of my skin, for about five minutes. It was probably one of the most touching experiences of my life and I realised that it wasn't God that I loved, but life itself, and the strange, impossible universe that had birthed it by such incredible chance.
It pains me to watch my planet crumble, little by little, bleeding from a thousand cuts. A big part of me thinks this may just be an adjustment period, and that the pollinators will all come back next year. I just can't silence my doubts and fears.
What would we do without bees?

Give love!

Do you know how many times I've relaxed under a cherry tree alive with the hum of bees? And how many times I've had people snatch me away from such idyllic scenes, shouting, "That tree is full of bees!"
I love bees. I always have. And yes, I've been stung... three times? The first when I was four, the last when I was 8 (I was on the monkey bars, and it had landed on a rung that I then grabbed). That alone should say something. People get stung when they swat at bees. I gently blow and wave in their direction when they get near my food, but otherwise I calm myself and enjoy their presence.
I wish I could be that tame about other things, like spiders. *shudder*
I hate spiders. I still feel horrible whenever I kill one and usually leave them alone, but I have nightmares about spiders. And I owned a tarantula as a kid. Hah! Go figure.

I don't mind spiders, as long as they stay out of my room. XD If I wake up and one's above me, I kill it. I can't help but imagine it crawling down my throat. X-(

Wasps in the car is the only kind of bee encounter that causes panic in me. But the tightness I feel in my throat whenever bees are around otherwise is admiration and joy.

Also, you say "It pains me to watch my planet crumble, little by little, bleeding from a thousand cuts. A big part of me thinks this may just be an adjustment period, and that the pollinators will all come back next year. I just can't silence my doubts and fears.
", which is EXACTLY the same way I feel. What surprises me more is that most people don't seem to take this problem seriously. When I found myself sweating for the high temperatures during the month of December, I was the only one who was quite nervous and unconfortable about this, thinking about the hozone shield (or whatever it's called in english).
Actually, human beings have a looong story of abusing of nature, a tradition (if so we can say) that is probably as long as humanity itself. For example I've read some articles about wild animals caught for circus games in the Roman era, and I was amazed to find out that they nearly caused the extinction of some species in diffeent areas.
So the problem is that now we are so technologically enhanched that when we do damage to nature, we can do it in great scale....
My theory is that maybe one day, probably still far to come, humanity will be the origin of its own collapse because of their doing, since as our society progresses so does the destruction of all what keeps us alive (fresh air, hozone shield, equilibrium in the ecosystem....).
