The death penalty should be rare. Like anything that's truly final. But it exists to protect members of a society from malefactors, who pose a danger to lives of others. Who, should they be allowed to continue living freely, would only upset order and destroy the sense of security to which people have a right. Prison, in my humble opinion, should be for rehabilitation of non-violent offenders. I'm not saying all violent offenders are irredeemable, but there doesn't seem to be a distinction in this society at all between people who smoke pot and people who shoot at children because they think they have a right to. Legally or in our media or collective understanding.

For instance, Sherif Arpaio's approach is completely dehumanising anyone who walks through the door of the filthy hellholes he calls a jail. The man has gone out of his way to focus on visible crime and non-violent offenses to project the image of strength and security at the expense of Arizona's people. age=1" What about Ambrett Spencer, for instance? After medical treatment was delayed for hours after she she started bleeding, this woman, who had pled guilty to a DUI, delivered her stillborn daughter. And yet she's the criminal. She's the danger?

Ambrett Spencer was one of 1,578 pregnant women who passed through Arpaio's jails in 2006, county records show. Only 42 of those women gave birth while in custody.

People with a couple DUIs deserve to spend a little time in jail, but they aren't exactly the dregs of society, either. These people are the real problem. They are the real threat. While people like Arpaio are compensating for their insecurity by pulling over every brown person in Phoenix and asking for ID, these people are shooting at kids and getting charged with assault.

Our priorities?!

It's so hard to like this country...

That's so awful... I can't believe this sort of thing happens so often. Well... I can. >.> But I don't want to.

I can see why you and Ron get along so well though. X3

When I was younger, I had the more generic point of view "hang 'em high!" "and eye for and eye!" etc. But the older I got tempered my hardline point of view to the point where I don't think that the death penalty is a deterant at all. Moreover, we are seeing people who are death row being released everyday because of DNA testing.

That puts a shiver up my spine because I make the connecting that we as a nation, may have put innocent people to death.

Your absolutely right. That's why the appeals process is so important. We should always place the burden on proving guilt, rather than innocence, because it's often very hard to know what someone has done. In this case, though, I don't think these people have a place among other human beings (the ones who shot at these people without warning despite knowing there were children in the car, and then called 911 to complain that these people were on their property).

As a point of interest, my grandfather has us pray in gratitude at Thanksgiving for all the people who have been exonerated and saved by DNA testing from prison and death. It's an interesting thing to give thanks for, considering we don't know anyone like that, but it's just one of the many reasons I love my family.

I like that your family holds a place in their hearts for the wrongly accused. I can't imagine what that must be like: for you life to just disapear before you that way.

As far as the people in our society who do horrible, horrible things to other people and we're dead certain? I wish I could answer the real justice for them. But perhaps, there is no justice: even when we lock them up for eternity; I've sorta grown up to realize that...sometime, the bad guy wins.

Yeah... there are no easy answers when great injustice is done. =(

In Quebec, it's even worse. Our justice system is based on a rehabilitation line of thought, since we don't have enough prisons, the justice system hands out what we call here "candy sentences". A good example I can give is how sex offenders are treated here. I'm sensitive when it comes to that subject, and I often see people here committing

I could go on for hours explaining all the retarded flaws in my justice system...needless to say, if you are questioning yours, you would get brain aneurysm because of how shitty it is here.

Stamps and Things

Normally I'm not into stamps because I think flashing is tacky and the sentiments are often glib and confrontational, but here are a few that I happen to like. If you don't, that's fine. I'd be happy to discuss it with you.
